Informal Education

Leslie Reid is the Associate Dean of Teaching & Learning for the Faculty of Science, at University of Calgary. Leslie is also a former Tamaratt Teaching Professor in Geoscience, and is considered one of Canada's best teachers, according to Maclean's On Campus. 

Mike Mahoney is an alumni of the University of Calgary who now teaches high school in Calgary. A former Faculty of Education Representative for the U of C's Students' Union, Mike recently became a certified auctioneer, and is eager to get started.

Raphael is back on Informal Education! Raphael Jacob, a fifth year Political Science major, is the University of Calgary's Students' Union 71st President. After serving on Student Legislative Council as a Faculty of Arts Representative, and then Vice President External, Raphael became the UofC SU President in May of 2013.

Irene Seto is the managing editor of Calgary's most awesome website, calgaryisawesome.com. As a graduate of the University of Calgary, Irene also works for the City of Calgary, as a Creative Services Specialist. 

Dawn Johnston is a Senior Instructor in the Department of Communication and Culture at the University of Calgary. With a PhD in Communications Studies from the University of Calgary, Johnston specializes in Food Culture and Gender and Sexuality in Popular Culture.

Michael Ullyot is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Calgary. With a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, and an M.Phil. from the University of Cambridge, Ullyot (“UH-lee-yit.”) specializes in early modern literature and the digital humanities.

Kristina Groves is a three time Canadian Olympic speed skater, with two silver medals in Turin 2006, and silver and bronze medals in Vancouver 2010. Groves is currently working on a Masters of Science in Sustainable Energy Development at the University of Calgary Haskayne School of Business.

Belo is back! David Brunning is a Calgary, Alberta based visual artist, who also goes by the name TheKidBelo. With his roots planted in the graffiti art culture, Belo is constantly evolving and creating art that transcends the street art genre. Over the years, David has achieved global success as an individual artist, and has gained further recognition through his collaborations with Brooklyn based artist, Tim Okamura. 

Jenna Westaway is a second year student/varsity track athlete at the University of Calgary. In her first year as a Dino, Jenna captured CIS Female Track Athlete of the year honours for 2012/13. When she is not training or studying, Jenna is helping develop a charitable organization that donates gently used running shoes to runners in the global south.

Michael Clarke is an Associate Professor in the Department of English, at the University of Calgary. Clarke, who holds a PhD from the University of Iowa, teaches courses in American literature and literary theory.

Gareth Lukes is the owner of Lukes Drug Mart, Calgary's oldest independent pharmacy. Gareth, a former all ages show promoter, is also one half of Night Heat, a management-promotions company. He also really likes music.

Maxwell Foran is a professor in the Department of Communication and Culture, at the University of Calgary. Foran, the son-in-law of Grant MacEwan, has written 13 books on various topics about Western Canadian history and culture. 

Mike Czuba, aka MC $hortbread, is a performance instructor in the Department of Drama, at the University of Calgary. Czuba, who is originally from Montreal, is also a playwright/scientist for Dancing Monkey Laboratories.

Waqas Iqbal, a recent graduate of the University of Calgary Faculty of Law, sits down to answer commonly asked questions about law school. 

Jed Anderson is a native Calgarian who spends his winters as a professional snowboarder, and his summers destroying city streets as a skateboarder. Sponsored by Nike Snowboarding, Salomon, and The Source, Jed's skateboard influenced snowboard style has changed the way kids ride, all over the world. Jed is also a lover of music, art and his homies.

Ben Cannon is the current University of Calgary Students' Union Vice President Student Life, an amateur stand-up comedian, and co-host of the I Can't Listen To This podcast.

Dr. Kent Donlevy is an award winning professor in the Faculty of Education, at the University of Calgary. Dr. Donlevy is also an Artisan baker, and an honorary Maritimer.

James Boettcher is the owner of Fiasco Gelato, and the brainchild behind the YYC Food Truck movement. He is also the former drummer of several Calgary bands, the former art director of a poker inspired clothing line, and a past TEDxCalgary event speaker.

Dr. Dru Marshall is the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) of the University of Calgary. She is also the former head coach of Canada's Women's National Field Hockey team, and was recently inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.
